MCP (Model Context Protocol) for accounting means connecting your accounting software to an AI assistant like Claude or ChatGPT, so it can read your books and answer real questions: what you owe in GST/HST, what you earned last quarter, what you drew from the company. For Canadian business owners, it turns bookkeeping data into answers.
It is 9pm, you are staring at your banking app, and the question is simple: can the business afford the new laptop, or is a chunk of that balance really the Canada Revenue Agency's (CRA's) sales tax money just resting in your account? Your accountant is excellent, but they are also asleep. Until recently your options were a spreadsheet, a guess, or a 2am Google spiral. MCP adds a fourth option: ask your books directly, in plain English, and get an answer built from your actual numbers.
Your books can only answer questions if they exist somewhere an AI can read them. Start your 30-day free trial and let the AI Bookkeeper build that foundation while you read.
Here is the one rule that explains everything in this guide: if the answer already lives in your books, a connected AI can find it in seconds. If it requires judgment about your future, that is still a conversation with your accountant. Everything below is just that rule applied to Canadian small business life.
What MCP actually is (and why Canadian owners should care)
MCP, or Model Context Protocol, is an open standard that lets AI assistants connect to other software. Think of it as the wall outlet of the AI world: one standard plug, and any tool built for it can draw power. The protocol itself is open and documented at modelcontextprotocol.io, and Claude, ChatGPT, and most serious AI assistants now support it.
Without MCP, an AI assistant is a brilliant advisor with amnesia. It can explain what HST is, beautifully, but it has no idea what YOUR HST situation looks like because it has never seen your transactions. Connect your books through an MCP server for accounting and the amnesia is gone: the assistant can look at your real revenue, your real expenses, and your real sales tax position before it says a word.
ReInvestWealth built its MCP server for exactly this. You sign in once from your AI assistant, no API keys and nothing to install, and your books become something you can talk to. More than 3,000 entrepreneurs already run their books on ReInvestWealth, which means the boring part (clean, categorized, CPA-level books) is exactly the part the AI gets to stand on.

Questions your books can finally answer
The magic is not the technology. The magic is the specific, slightly nagging questions that used to require an afternoon and now take one sentence. A few that come up constantly for Canadian owners:
"How is this year actually going?" Revenue against last year, expenses that grew faster than sales, the month things went sideways. The AI pulls it from your books and explains it like a person, not like a pivot table.
"How much have I taken out of the company?" Owner draws are where clean bookkeeping pays off. Ask, and get the year's total plus the trail behind it, which is exactly what your accountant will want at tax time when they sort out salary versus dividends.
"What is still missing before year-end?" Uncategorized transactions, receipts that never made it in, accounts that stopped syncing. The assistant can hunt down loose ends faster than you can say "I will deal with it in April" (which, for the record, is not a bookkeeping strategy).
Reading is only half of it. An MCP connection can act on your books too, so the newer habit is telling them what to do next:
"Catch and Correct any mistakes in my bookkeeping." The assistant finds common bookkeeping mistakes, shows you the fix it plans to make, and applies it once you say yes. No export, no hunting through screens, no doing it one row at a time.
"Send this month's invoice to my client." Invoicing lives in the same books, so the assistant can draft the invoice from what is already there and send it with your approval. Getting paid should not require opening six tabs.
"Close out the month." Sweep the uncategorized transactions, match the receipts, and pull the month-end report. The assistant does the assembly line; anything that would change your books waits for your yes first.
GST, HST, QST: where a connected AI earns its keep
Canadian sales tax is the strongest argument for MCP for accounting, because the answers change by province and by quarter, and the deadline does not care that you were busy running the business.
First, the map. Ontario, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland and Labrador, and Prince Edward Island charge HST. British Columbia, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba charge GST plus provincial sales tax. Alberta keeps it to GST only. And Quebec charges GST plus QST, administered by Revenu Québec, so Quebec businesses effectively track two returns. An AI reading your books applies the right lens for where you operate instead of the generic "GST" answer the internet loves to give.
Second, the threshold everyone asks about. Once your taxable sales pass $30,000 over four consecutive calendar quarters (or in a single quarter), you are required to register and start charging. The full rules are on the Canada Revenue Agency's registration page. Note that it is $30,000 in sales, not profit. The CRA counts what came in, not what survived your software subscriptions. If you are close to the line, ask your books "what are my taxable sales over the last four quarters?" and you will know in seconds, instead of discovering it retroactively (the expensive way). For quick what-if arithmetic on a single invoice, the free GST/HST calculator does the math.
Third, the filing itself. ReInvestWealth already prepares and e-files GST, HST, and QST returns from your categorized transactions. Through the MCP server, your AI assistant can run that same workflow: pull the return together, walk you through what it found, and file, with your explicit approval before anything is submitted. You stay the signer. The AI just does the part that used to eat a Saturday.
This is exactly the kind of work ReInvestWealth's AI Bookkeeper was built to feed. See how it works and what it costs (a low monthly subscription, not a bookkeeper's retainer).

Year-end without the March scramble
Year-end in Canada has a rhythm. Sole proprietors report business income on the T2125 with their personal return. Corporations file a T2 within six months of their fiscal year-end. And in between sits the annual ritual: the accountant asks for your records, and you discover what state they are in.
Books you can talk to change that handoff completely. Before you send anything, ask the assistant what is uncategorized, what receipts are missing, and whether the year's numbers look complete. You hand your accountant something finished instead of something archaeological. Clean records are also your best insurance if the CRA ever comes asking; here is how far back the CRA can audit and why organized books make it a non-event.
To be clear about roles: MCP does not replace your accountant, and it is not trying to. The AI handles the routine legwork (AI bookkeeping does the categorizing all year), and your accountant spends their hours on the judgment calls: tax planning, salary versus dividends, the filing itself. Built by CPAs so you don't have to be one, and so yours can do their best work.
How to connect your books to an AI assistant
The setup is closer to adding an app to your phone than to an IT project. Here is the Canadian owner's version:
Get your books living in one place. Connect your bank to ReInvestWealth and let the AI Bookkeeper categorize as transactions arrive. If you are starting behind, upload bank statements and it catches you up. The AI assistant is only as smart as the books underneath it.
Open the connectors menu in your assistant. In Claude, that is Settings, then Connectors (available on every plan, including free, which currently allows one custom connector). In ChatGPT, custom MCP connectors live in Developer mode, currently in beta on paid plans. Both interfaces move fast, so expect the menus to keep evolving.
Add the ReInvestWealth MCP server. One sign-in from the connectors menu. No API keys, nothing to install, and it inherits the same permissions as your account. The MCP server for accounting page has the current details, plus free CPA-written AI skills for the jobs that repeat.
Ask your first real question. Start with the one that has been quietly bothering you. "Where do I stand on GST/HST this quarter?" is a popular opener for a reason.
Invite your accountant. ReInvestWealth supports shared access, so your accountant can look at the same clean books (and yes, ask the AI their own questions). The owner-plus-accountant setup is where this gets genuinely powerful.
A note on safety, because letting software near your books deserves one: the assistant can only see what your sign-in allows, and any change it proposes waits for your approval. Reading is instant. Writing asks first.
3 habits that keep the answers sharp
Feed the Smart Shoebox (your receipt inbox). Forward receipts by email or snap them as they happen. Answers built on matched receipts are answers you can hand to an accountant, or an auditor, without flinching.
Ask monthly, not annually. The owners who get the most out of MCP ask the same three questions at each month-end: where is my GST/HST, how did the month do, what is missing. Ten minutes, twelve times a year, and tax season becomes a formality.
Answer when the AI asks. When you tell the assistant to fix or file something, it checks with you before touching your books. Saying yes (or no) takes seconds and keeps you in full control of your own numbers.
You could keep answering these questions the old way, with a spreadsheet, a calculator app, and a strong coffee. Or you could connect your bank, let the AI keep the books clean, and just ask. ReInvestWealth holds a 4.8-star rating on Capterra, and the books it keeps are the kind an AI assistant can actually work with. Start your 30-day free trial →
Common questions about MCP for accounting in Canada
Can an AI assistant tell me how much GST/HST I owe right now?
Yes, if your books are categorized and your sales tax profile is set up. The assistant reads the sales tax you collected on income and the tax you paid on expenses, and nets them into your current position. The final filing amount is confirmed through the filing workflow, but the running answer is available any day of the quarter, not just at the deadline.
Does this work in Quebec with GST and QST?
Yes. Quebec businesses track GST and QST together, and ReInvestWealth's books carry both, including the Revenu Québec filing workflow. Ask a Quebec-flavoured question ("where do I stand on GST and QST this period?") and the answer reflects both taxes rather than mashing them into one number.
Can the AI actually file my sales tax return?
Through the ReInvestWealth MCP server, yes: it prepares the return from your books using the same GST/HST/QST filing workflow the app uses, then asks for your explicit approval before anything is e-filed. Nothing is submitted without you saying so. Think of the AI as doing the assembly, while you keep the signature.
Do I need to be technical to use MCP?
No. Despite the protocol-sounding name, connecting is a sign-in from a settings menu, not a developer project. If you have ever added an app to your phone and clicked "allow," you have the full skill set.
What if my books are a year behind?
Then the first job is the books, not the connection. Upload your bank statements, let the AI Bookkeeper categorize the backlog, and you are typically caught up in far less time than you have been dreading. Once the books are complete, every question above starts returning real answers.
What does my accountant get out of this?
Cleaner books, better questions, and fewer emails asking for missing statements. Your accountant stops spending their hours on data cleanup and spends them on the work you actually hire them for: planning, filing, and telling you when a decision has tax consequences. Accounting firms can even use the same connection across client files, which is exactly the kind of routine work the AI should be absorbing.
A note from our CPAs: This guide is educational and covers the general rules for Canadian small business owners. Tax situations vary, so for advice on your specific circumstances, talk to your accountant. (If they use ReInvestWealth, the books will already be in shape when you do.)
