FAQ

Sales tax, explained

How do I calculate sales tax in Canada?

Multiply the pre-tax amount by your province's combined sales tax rate. In an HST province like Ontario that's a single rate (13%); in a GST + PST province like British Columbia you add the 5% federal GST and the 7% provincial PST separately. The calculator above does this for you: pick your province, enter the amount, and it breaks out each tax and the total.

Is this a GST/HST calculator?

Yes. This is a free GST/HST calculator that also handles PST, QST, and RST. Pick your province or territory and it applies the right tax automatically: GST only in Alberta and the territories, HST in Ontario and Atlantic Canada, GST plus PST in British Columbia and Saskatchewan, GST plus RST in Manitoba, and GST plus QST in Quebec.

How much is sales tax by province?

It ranges from 5% (GST only, in Alberta and the territories) to 15% (HST in New Brunswick, Nova Scotia is 14%, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland & Labrador at 15%). Ontario is 13% HST. Quebec is 5% GST plus 9.975% QST. British Columbia, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba charge 5% GST plus a provincial PST/RST. The full table is above.

How do I calculate sales tax backwards (remove tax from a total)?

Switch the calculator to “Remove sales tax” and enter the tax-included total. It divides the total by 1 plus the combined rate to find the pre-tax amount, then shows how much tax was inside. For example, a $113 total in Ontario (13% HST) works out to $100 before tax and $13 of HST.

What's the difference between GST, HST, PST, and QST?

GST is the 5% federal Goods and Services Tax that applies everywhere in Canada. HST (Harmonized Sales Tax) combines the federal and provincial portions into one rate in Ontario and the Atlantic provinces. PST (Provincial Sales Tax, called RST in Manitoba) is a separate provincial tax charged on top of GST in BC, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba. QST is Quebec's provincial sales tax, administered by Revenu Quebec alongside GST.

Which provinces have HST versus GST plus PST?

HST provinces are Ontario (13%), New Brunswick (15%), Nova Scotia (14%), Prince Edward Island (15%), and Newfoundland & Labrador (15%). GST-only regions are Alberta, Yukon, Northwest Territories, and Nunavut (5%). GST plus a separate provincial tax applies in British Columbia (PST 7%), Saskatchewan (PST 6%), Manitoba (RST 7%), and Quebec (QST 9.975%).

Do I charge sales tax based on where I am or where my customer is?

Generally, the rate follows the “place of supply”, which is usually the province where the customer receives the goods or service, not where your business is located. That means a seller in Alberta shipping to Ontario typically charges 13% HST. The rules have exceptions by product and service type, so if you sell across provinces regularly, confirm your setup with a CPA. You can book a CPA consultation through ReInvestWealth.

When do I have to register to charge sales tax?

Registration for GST/HST becomes mandatory once your worldwide taxable sales pass $30,000 over four consecutive calendar quarters, or in a single quarter. Below that you're a small supplier and registration is optional, though registering voluntarily lets you claim back the GST/HST you pay on business purchases (input tax credits). Provincial taxes like PST and QST have their own registration rules.
