Stripe charges a subscription invoice at the Billing rate instead of the invoicing rate, so these two never stack.

Stripe's standard U.S. card pricing: 2.9% + $0.30 per successful charge, +1.5% for international cards, +1% for currency conversion, +0.4% per paid Stripe invoice, +0.7% on recurring subscription payments. Custom-pricing accounts differ.

How Stripe fees work in the U.S.

Every successful card charge pays a percentage of the amount plus a fixed fee. A $100.00 payment costs $3.20 in fees, so $96.80 lands in your payout.

Stripe fee = Amount × 2.9% + $0.30
To receive a set amount = (Amount + $0.30) ÷ (1 − rate)

Fees are what Stripe costs. Collection is what it pays.

Seeing the fee in dollars can make Stripe feel expensive. Stripe's published numbers point the other way: the businesses paying these fees collect more of their revenue, faster.

FAQ

Stripe fees, explained

How much does Stripe charge per transaction in the US?

Stripe's standard US pricing is 2.9% plus $0.30 per successful card charge. International cards (issued outside the US) add 1.5%, and if Stripe converts the payment into US dollars, currency conversion adds another 1%. Accounts on negotiated or custom pricing pay different rates.

How do I calculate a Stripe fee?

A Stripe transaction fee has two parts: multiply the payment amount by the percentage rate, then add the fixed fee. On standard pricing, a $100 payment costs $100 × 2.9% + $0.30 = $3.20, so $96.80 lands in your payout. Add the international card or currency conversion surcharges to the percentage first when they apply. The calculator above does this for you and shows the full breakdown.

How much should I charge to receive a specific amount?

Work the fee backwards: charge = (amount you want + fixed fee) ÷ (1 − percentage rate). To receive $100 on standard pricing, charge ($100 + $0.30) ÷ (1 − 0.029) = $103.30. Switch the calculator to “Charge to receive” and it does the reverse math for you.

What counts as an international card or currency conversion?

An international card is one issued outside the US, even if the customer pays in US dollars; it adds 1.5%. Currency conversion applies when the customer pays in another currency and Stripe converts it to USD for your payout; it adds 1%. A European customer paying in euros into a USD account triggers both.

Does this include Stripe invoicing and subscription fees?

Yes, both are toggles on the calculator. A payment collected through a Stripe-hosted invoice adds 0.4% (capped at US$2.00 per invoice), and a recurring subscription payment through Stripe Billing adds 0.7%. They never stack: an invoice generated by a subscription is charged the Billing rate instead of the invoicing rate, so turning one on turns the other off. Both sit on top of the standard card fee.

Does this work for Shopify Payments or Square fees?

The math pattern is identical (a percentage plus a fixed fee), but the defaults here are Stripe's standard card rates. Shopify Payments and Square each publish their own rates, which also vary by plan, so check yours before reusing the numbers. Stripe's invoicing and checkout fees can also differ from the standard card rate.

Can I use this as a general credit card processing fee calculator?

As a guide, yes. Most credit card processing fees are a percentage plus a fixed fee, so the breakdown reads the same way for other processors. The presets here follow Stripe pricing, and we keep the standard Stripe processing fees and surcharge rates current, so check your own processor's published rates before relying on the exact total.

Are Stripe fees tax deductible in the US?

Yes. Payment processing fees are a normal business expense, deducted like bank or merchant fees on Schedule C (or your corporate return). The bookkeeping challenge is capturing every fee: Stripe subtracts them from your payouts, so they never show up as a separate charge on your bank statement.
