Why your bank feed keeps breaking

Most accounting software gets your bank transactions through a “bank feed”: a company like Plaid connects to your bank and passes your transactions along automatically. Banks don't always allow it.

A bank feed like Plaid

An outside company connects to your bank for you, so your bank's security rules get in the way.

  • Some banks make you turn off two-step verification (the code sent to your phone) before it will connect.
  • Turn that code back on, and your transactions stop coming in.
  • The connection expires now and then, and you have to reconnect it.
  • When you first connect, you only get your last 45 to 90 days.
Bank Transaction Import

You sign in to your bank yourself, and the AI copies your transactions into your bookkeeping.

  • Two-step verification stays on.
  • You sign in to your bank yourself, on your own computer.
  • Works with any bank whose website shows your transactions.
  • Can go back years, using your old bank statements.

How to import bank transactions without Plaid

About five minutes, and you can watch every step on your screen.

  1. Start it in your AI assistant

Ask Claude to run the Bank Transaction Import skill. It opens your bank's website on your screen.

  2. Sign in to your bank like always

Type your password, or let your password manager fill it in, and enter the code sent to your phone. The AI never sees either one.

  3. It finds what your bookkeeping is missing

It downloads your transaction history from the bank and compares it with what's already recorded in ReInvestWealth.

  4. You approve, it adds them

It shows you the missing transactions. Say yes and it adds just those, double-checks the result, and signs you out of your bank.

What it will never do

These limits are written into the skill's instructions, and anyone can read them on GitHub.

Never sees your password

You sign in to your bank yourself. It never types, reads, or saves your password, security answers, or the code sent to your phone. If your password manager fills it in, the password stays hidden.

Never moves money

It can't send money, pay bills, or change anything at your bank. It only reads and downloads your transaction history.

Never records anything twice

Before it adds a transaction to your bookkeeping, it checks the account, amount, and date against what's already there.

Never adds without your OK

It shows you the transactions it wants to add to your bookkeeping, then waits for your yes. You can let it add them automatically each week if you prefer.

Never trusts a search ad

Scammers buy ads that look like bank sign-in pages. It only goes to your bank's real website, never a link from search results.

Never shares your financial details

After each import it tells us only how your bank's website was laid out. Never your transactions, balances, or account numbers.

Open source, MIT licensed. Three steps:

  1. Add the ReInvestWealth plugin to Claude or ChatGPT and connect your ReInvestWealth account.
  2. Download the skill and upload it to your AI assistant.
  3. Run it by typing /riw-bank-transaction-import

Tip: a password manager that auto-fills your bank sign-in makes signing in automatic.

Works best in an assistant that can use your computer, like Claude on desktop. No computer use? Download your transactions from your bank, share the file, and the skill does the rest.

Open banking, under your control

Open banking means your bank data belongs to you, and you choose which apps get it. This skill works that way today: you sign in to your own bank, on your own computer, and decide which transactions go into your bookkeeping.

You sign in, not a company

Your bank sees you signing in from your usual computer and internet connection, not an outside company signing in for you.

Nothing left connected

No outside company stays connected to your bank account. When the import is done, it signs you out of your bank.

Looks, never touches

At your bank, it only reads and downloads your transaction history. It can't send money, pay bills, or change your settings.

Any bank

If you can see your transactions on your bank's website, it can copy them into your bookkeeping.

Bank Transaction Import questions, answered

What does Bank Transaction Import do?

It copies the transactions from your bank's website into your bookkeeping in ReInvestWealth, the accounting software. Your AI assistant opens your bank's website on your computer, you sign in, and it downloads your transactions, finds the ones your bookkeeping doesn't have yet, and adds them once you say yes.

Why does my bank make me turn off two-step verification to connect?

Two-step verification is the extra code your bank sends to your phone when you sign in. Services like Plaid connect to your bank for you, and some banks only allow that if you turn the code off. Turn it back on and your transactions stop coming in. This skill doesn't connect for you. You sign in yourself, on your own computer, so the code stays on.

Is Bank Transaction Import a Plaid alternative?

Yes, for getting your bank transactions into your bookkeeping. Plaid stays connected to your bank all the time. This skill only connects while it runs, with you signing in, so it works even with banks Plaid can't reach. You can also use both: if Plaid already brings in an account's transactions, the skill only fills in what Plaid missed.

Which banks does it work with?

Any bank or credit card whose website lets you see and download your transactions, including credit unions and online banks. Some large US banks have started limiting AI assistants on their websites. If yours does, download your transactions yourself, share the file, and the skill does the rest.

Does it see my banking password?

No. You sign in to your bank yourself. It never types, reads, or saves your password, security answers, or the code sent to your phone. If your password manager fills in your sign-in, it may click the bank's sign-in button, but it never sees the password.

Can signing in to my bank be automatic?

Almost. If your password manager auto-fills your bank sign-in, the AI can click the sign-in button for you, so you never type your password and it never sees it. If your bank sends a code to your phone, you still enter that yourself. That's what keeps two-step verification on.

Can it move money or change anything at my bank?

No. At your bank it only reads and downloads your transaction history and statements. It can't send money, pay bills, accept offers, or change settings, and it signs you out of your bank when it's done.

Will it record the same transaction twice?

No. Before it adds anything, it checks each transaction against your bookkeeping by account, amount, and date, including transactions you deleted on purpose. After adding, it checks again that your records match the bank.

My bank connection stopped working. Can it fill the gap?

Yes. It finds the transactions that never came in while the connection was down and adds them once you approve. It also lets you know the connection needs fixing, since reconnecting it in ReInvestWealth is what turns the daily updates back on.

How far back can it go?

As far back as you want. Bank websites usually let you download only the last few months, so for older dates it reads your monthly bank statements, and it checks that each statement adds up exactly before using it.

Can it run automatically every week?

Yes. After the first import, you can have it run every week: it adds any missing transactions to your bookkeeping and sends you a summary of what it added. Your bank will usually ask you to sign in each time. With a password manager that auto-fills, that's one click, plus the code on your phone if your bank sends one.

What do I need to use it?

A ReInvestWealth account, the ReInvestWealth plugin in Claude or ChatGPT, and an AI assistant that can use your computer, like Claude on desktop. If yours can't, download your transactions from your bank yourself, share the file, and the skill does the rest.

Does it work with QuickBooks, Xero, or Wave?

No. It adds transactions to ReInvestWealth, the accounting software. If your bank connection problems are in another app, you can move your bookkeeping, history included, to ReInvestWealth with the free Migrate History skill.

Is it free?

Yes. The skill is free and open source (MIT license). It needs a ReInvestWealth account, which starts with a free trial.

What does ReInvestWealth learn when I run it?

Only how your bank's website was laid out, like where the download button was, so the next import goes smoothly. Never your transactions, balances, account numbers, or anything you typed.

Every bank account in your bookkeeping. 2FA on, you in control.

ReInvestWealth is the AI accounting software that keeps your revenue, expenses, and profit current all year. This skill makes sure transactions from every bank make it in.
