How to File & Pay GST/HST for Free

The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) has streamlined the process of paying taxes for businesses. Their online platform enables business owners to pay their Goods and Services Tax & Harmonized Sales Tax (GST/HST) directly from their bank accounts, without incurring any additional fees.


Here's a guide on how to use this service to pay your GST/HST for free using your business debit card.


Step 1: File your GST/HST Return

There are many ways to file your GST/HST return at a cost but here are 2 ways to file for free.

Step 2: Access CRA's My Payment Service

After filing, you'll need to make a payment if you have a balance owing. To do so, navigate to the CRA's My Payment service by visiting the official website.



Step 3: Select the GST/HST Payment Type

Step 4: Select The Payment Allocation

  • Select "Amount owing" to pay an amount from a notice of (re) assessment, statement, or letters issued by CRA.

  • Select "Balance due" to make a payment on the remainder of tax that you owe, when the payment is due prior to filing a return.

  • Select "Interim" to make an instalment payment.

  • Select "Payment on filing" if you filed your return using GST/HST NETFILE, TELEFILE, or Internet File Transfer. This is also the option to select if you filed your GST/HST return using ReInvestWealth's Auto-File.



Step 5: Enter Your Payment Details

After filing your return using ReInvestWealth's Tax Auto-File, you'll get an email containing your Account Number, Period End Date, and Final Tax Amount. Simply copy paste these details from the email to the CRA website.
